Anyone who is unhappy with their chin fullness or their profile and feel that it makes them look heavier and older than they really are. What to expect? Your SANTÉ practitioner will determine if you are a candidate for Kybella and create an individualized treatment protocol based upon your specific concerns. The precise amount of injections will be determined by your clinician based upon the amount of submentum (underchin) fat that is present. The process for each treatment is between 15 and 20 minutes. The amount of treatments that a patient needs will be determined by the amount of submentum fat, the distribution of fat and the patients concerns. The amount of treatments varies from 2-6 total treatments for ultimate results. Check out these incredible before and after photos:
Choosing what type of massage technique is best for you can be confusing. Because the decision can be difficult, folks often choose Swedish massage to fell more relaxed and deep tissue if they feel extraordinarily tight. But, you should be aware that there are several types of modalities that our massage therapist can provide to customize your experience based upon your current concerns. Let’s take a look at common concerns and the treatment recommendations for them:
You feel tense, so much so that your back and shoulder feel like a rock
Possible recommendations for you: Reflexology, Palliative Massage and Reiki are excellent choices for you. Why not deep tissue? When a person is extraordinarily stressed and the muscles have become stiff and have lost flexibility and pliability, one should not try and press and push the tissue into submission. In addition, this can be rather painful as the therapist may add to the reflexive tension response. In these scenarios, it makes more sense to calm down the nervous system and help to relieve the source of tension. As a result, the muscles will comply and follow suit, once nervous system is less agitated. Once a deep state of relaxation has been achieved, then chronic tension resulting from stress can be addressed.
You are physically active, play sports, workout regularly and have specific areas of discomfort
Possible recommendations for you: Deep Tissue or Sports Massage. Why is deep tissue helpful in this scenario? Chronic tension can often be relieved with a deeper manipulation of the muscle fiber – and as an added benefit, Sports Massage is helpful for reconditioning the muscle fibers so that the likelihood of maintaining chronic tension is dramatically reduced.
You are very physically active but often neglect stretching and avoid yoga
Possible recommendations for you: You should consider Sports Massage. The reason is that Sports Massage, as aforementioned above, assists in aiding in relieving chronic tension by addressing problem areas that can lead to injuries, decreased range of motion, stiffness in the muscle, etc. As a result, a person can experience greater range of motion, more fluidity to the muscle and less adhesions in the muscle fiber.
You work at a computer all day and your neck, shoulders and upper back are chronically sore and tight
Possible recommendations for you: In this case, Swedish massage and Therapeutic Massage are excellent choices for you. The reason is that these techniques borrow from various massage modalities to address tension and soreness while providing stress relief and relaxation. Choosing between Swedish versus Therapeutic depends on the muscle tension in your shoulders, your posture, your sensitivity and your preferred depth of pressure.
With the current state of our ozone layer and our exposure to ever increasing levels of UV light it is critical to be in the habit of SPF everyday. If it’s in your makeup or moisturizer make sure it’s at least 25 SPF or higher & that you are reapplying as makeup falls or fades. If your makeup is no longer on then neither is your SPF.
To avoid this problem I recommend Epionce SPF 50 everyday under makeup. It stays active longer, is the lightest weight SPF I’ve ever come across and sits beautifully under make up or alone with a very matte finish.
Now we can test individuals for their ability to convert certain B vitamins with the appropriate enzymes. The MTHFR gene provides instructions for forming the enzyme, methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase. This enzyme is responsible for aiding the body in processing amino acids (the building blocks of proteins). Methylenetetrahydrofolate reductase is an important player in the chemical reaction that involves the vitamin folate. This reaction is required for the multistep process that converts the amino acid homocysteine to another amino acid, methionine. The body uses methionine to make proteins and aids in many processes that take place in the body. There are 40 different types of MTHFR gene mutations that have been identified and for some folks, their gene mutation does not allow them to covert homocysteine to methionine, leading to higher levels of homocysteine and lower levels of methionine. This can cause various risk factors that include heart disease…
To determine if you have the MTHFR gene mutation, ask your health practitioner to run the test for you next time your practitioner wants to run laboratory tests.
Acupuncture is the insertion of tiny needles into the body and has been used for more than 2000 years. Acupuncture locally relieves pain by relaxing tight muscles and engaging lax muscles. It also activates the circulation, nervous system and immune system to locally and systemically reduce inflammation and improve homeostasis. In the mental emotional realm, acupuncture improves mental clarity, reduces stress and anxiety while improving mind body integration, causing you to feel more present in your body and more relaxed in your emotional experience.
While acupuncture is commonly used for pain and stress reduction, it is also effective for treating women’s and men’s health concerns, digestive disorders, sleep disturbances and infertility and more. Please feel free to schedule a complimentary consultation with one of our Acupuncturists at SANTÉ, if you have specific health concerns that acupuncture may treat.
In Moderation: Chocolate for Health By Dr. Provorse
Anti-Oxidant Properties Antioxidants gobble up free radicals, which are destructive molecules that are implicated in heart disease and other ailments.
Lowers Blood Pressure A 2003 report in The Journal of the American Medical Association revealed that dark chocolate lowers high blood pressure.
Improves Mood Chocolate contains a compound, phenylethylamine (PEA) that is a precursor to the neurotransmitters dopamine and norepinephrine. The brain produces high amounts of PEA during infatuation, when people feel like they are falling in love. A number of studies have shown PEA to improve depression.
The Health Myths of Chocolate:
- “Chocolate causes acne”
Overactive oil glands, heredity, dead skin cells that lodge in skin pores and hormonal changes– when combined with poor liver detoxication- are what makes one vulnerable acne.
- “Chocolate causes headaches”
While some people are sensitive to cocoa and or dairy (in milk chocolate) and should therefore not consume it, there has been research showing that typically chocolate does not provoke migraine headaches.
- “Chocolate causes dental cavities”
If a high-grade dark chocolate is consumed in small quantities, dental caries may actually be prevented, according to one study. It is the high sugar content of milk chocolate or other candies that predispose one to decay.
Beautiful spring is in bloom! Unfortunately for some, that means allergy symptoms, including runny nose, congestion, itchy-watery eyes, brain-fog and fatigue. Many also suffer in the fall, winter or year-round and it can greatly decrease the enjoyment of the seasons. One of the most helpful elements in addressing allergies is a concept called “total load”. Simply put; the amount of irritants coming in is greater than the amount the body can handle at a given time. For allergic individuals, irritants include allergens, but also include toxins, food allergens, chemicals, etc. So, by removing any contributor to the total load, allergy symptoms may be reduced.
- First and foremost, try to avoid the offending allergen. Since we can’t get rid of spring, here are some ways to reduce exposure:
- Use a HEPA quality home air filter and close the doors and windows in allergy seasons.
- Vacuum rugs using a HEPA filter bag twice a week and wash small rugs, curtains or other decorative fabrics monthly.
- Try to eliminate mold and mildew from the home, basement, walls and bathrooms.
- Many allergic individuals also have an allergy to dust mites. Dust mite dander can be minimized by using dust mite covers on bed pillows and mattress.
- Decrease exposure from pets by washing them frequently and keeping them out of the bedroom.
Monitor news and websites for alerts of “high pollen counts” and avoid exercising outdoors on those days.
- Remove shoes before entering the home. Remove outer clothes as quickly as possible if gardening or mowing lawn. Shower immediately after yard work.
The second element is to avoid exposure to other irritants and toxins that are contributing to the “total load”. This is a short list of items that may make a big impact.
- Avoid fabric softeners, perfume, scented candles and chemical air fresheners.
- Use natural and hypo-allergenic cleaners for your home, clothes and body.
- Paint with water-based, low-fume paints and avoid purchasing new carpets.
- Never smoke inside. Quit smoking if possible.
- Replace non-stick and aluminum cookware with stainless steel.
- Air out dry cleaning prior to bringing it inside.
- Use a chlorine filter for drinking water and, ideally, for bath/shower water too.
There are also natural methods for reducing allergy symptoms as well because, clearly, complete avoidance of allergens in the air is simply not possible. Vitamin C is of huge benefit in reducing allergy symptoms due to its’ proven ability to bolster the immune system. Quercetin is a potent anti-oxidant which is known to strengthen the walls of Mast Cells, which contain the particles which activate 50% of the allergic response, diminishing their release into the body. The herb Stinging Nettle is a traditional remedy that is extremely helpful. Its’ believed that the aerial parts of Stinging Nettle contain a natural anti-histamine which has shown to be significantly more effective then their pharmaceutical counterparts. Anti-inflammatory herbs such as feverfew, turmeric, ginger, and other natural bio-flavonoids decrease the inflammation from allergic responses that are already underway. Plant Enzymes, taken between meals, are also effective at reducing systemic inflammation.
As with all health concerns, the most profound way to address allergies is to identify and remove the cause. This is done by asking the question “why?”. Why do I have allergies? What factor(s) plays the most significant role in affecting my immune system and increasing my personal “total load”? Working with a naturopath to uncover and treat the root cause is the ideal long term approach for elimination of symptoms and finding lasting relief.

SANTÉ’s Bryndl Mar is a certified Esthetician who specializes in advanced skin resurfacing and client education. She took the time to sit down with me to talk about what treatments are most beneficial for these cold winter months.
JT: What are the best skin treatments for this time of year?
BM: In the winter months with lack of time spent in the sun, it is a great time to work on refreshing your skin with resurfacing treatments.
JT: What are resurfacing treatments?
BM: Resurfacing includes treatments such as lasers, IPL, chemical peels, microdermabrasion, and Dermafiling™. The goal of these treatments is all about reversing the damage we may have done during the summer months. I always tell my clients we are repairing yesterday’s mistakes for tomorrow’s bad ideas.
JT: Can you tell me more about the lasers and IPL? I’m not sure everyone knows what that means and how they work.
BM: Of course. At SANTÉ, we have varying levels of treatments we can use to treat skin resurfacing problems. One option is our Icon 1540 Erbium fractional non-ablative laser. Non-Ablative Laser Resurfacing is usually the quickest and most effective way to get your skin to regenerate itself. The laser works by delivering energy deep into the skin, affecting old skin cells, stretch marks, and scar tissue, generating new collagen for skin that is smoother and more even. With laser skin renewal you can easily clear many undesirable skin imperfections on your face and body. This fractional laser treatment is fast, easy and provides remarkable results you will be happy to show off.
The next option would be our IPL/ Photo Facial treatments.
JT: Can you explain what that stands for and what the difference between the laser and IPL are?
BM: Sure. IPL stands for Intense Pulsed Light (IPL); it’s used for Photo Facial treatments and is a technology where light is converted into heat energy. You can think of treatments like a very powerful camera flash lamp being held against your skin. The selected light waves target chromophores (color pigments) such as melanin in brown spots, hair follicles, and hemoglobin in broken or diffused blood vessels. The light waves can also target specific protein molecules in acne bacteria and in collagen. IPL treats all conditions without disruption to the skin’s surface.
The treatments with laser and intense pulse light both work in the same way, choosing wavelengths that are absorbed by the target. A laser uses light with one specific wavelength and intense pulsed light uses a band of wavelengths. Lasers have been used in surgery for years. The IPL is an adaptation of the laser, more suited to the beauty industry. The biggest difference between laser and IPL, as far as treatment is concerned, is the coverage. Lasers produce light from one specific wavelength, or color, for a very specific target. The light emitted from the IPL is composed of a spectrum of colors from different wavelengths, enabling selective photo-absorption (light absorption) to different targets. In other words, using the IPL is like using a group of lasers in a single treatment.
JT: So is one better than the other?
BM: I wouldn’t say so. For instance, what might be better for my skin might not be the best option for your skin. Everyone has unique skin and concerns, which is why we always recommend a consultation and a customized treatment plan.
JT: What sort of results can you expect all the treatments mentioned above?
BM: Results may vary from one person to another. Lasers and IPL are going to show faster results but peels, microdermabrasion, and Dermafiling are great treatments as well. Overall, resurfacing is a very effective tool for treating unwanted pigmentation, acne scarring, sun damage, enlarged pores, fine lines and wrinkles, building collagen and helping brighten the complexion. You should leave with the skin feeling smooth, fresh, and rejuvenated.
JT: How often should you get these treatments?
BM: It will vary for each patient. But in general, you could do these treatments 1-2 times per month.
JT: Well Bryndl, it sounds like SANTÉ has endless options for skin resurfacing?
BM: We definitely strive to have the latest tools available and thus are able to customize every treatment plan to every clients unique skin needs.
JT: Well I think that is all the time I have for today. Thank you for all the information! It has been so helpful!
